Secret source of enclosures

Maybe someone has already stumbled onto these as a source for cheap DIY enclosures, but I thought I'd mention them. My buddy owns a junk yard, and was going through his old inventory to crush, since scrap metal prices are up so high. He had a big box of 80s car computers, and the housings on those things are just the right size, and built like tanks! If you have access to them, they're worth having, and since they're so old, they'll probably just give them to you since they're obsolete. Just an FYI.

Got my attention! I'm curious what they look like and size. Anyone have one?

I'v also heard that newer cars use potentiometer-based acceleration pedals.  Possible source for volume/wah pedal parts.  Haven't been out to a U-Pull it to grab one...

Any pictures available?  I've tried to search google images but I'm not even sure what I'm looking for exactly...
Sounds like a great find for sure.

Yeah, what exactly is a car computer? The enclosure where the brains of the car are installed?
I love the smell of solder in the morning.

I work in a Chevrolet Dealership and I know that most of the computers I have seen are rather bulky and on the ugly side.
Some are in aluminum housings with cooling fins but, because of the shape and construction IMO they are quite useless
as far as enclosures for effects. From the '70s up through the '90s GM used some sheet metal type housings that again are
nothing to really rave about + the depth leaves them kinda useless as well.
Personally, they could probably serve the purpose but, I don't think they are quite worth the time and effort.
Also, many times, at least in my area, even used auto-parts/junkyards want what is called a "core" in return for the one
they sell to you, kind of like returnable bottles and cans. So, even if you were to find one deemed "useful", you still have to pay for it as
some of the core charges can be as high as $250!
