Rat power supply question.

here's the schem:



I plan not to use that 1N4001 diode, instead, I could put a 9V zener diode, that way I could connect "radioshack" dc adapter and have somekind of stabilisation, right?

I could, put that 1N4001 in the place of that 47ohm resistor so I could protect the circuit from connecting the powersupply backwards, so no diode lost

Correct me if I'm wrong, or there is a smarter solution? I don't plan to solder 7809 onto the dc jack heh
