the wah will be one of my next builds.  I have an older Thomas Organ, Cry Baby.
The caps look like foil rolled up in plastic wrap. What are these called?
Do they have any mojo value?

There is the old inductor as well. If I get the two inductor pcb and do some switchable cap mods, then I could basically switch between the older version and a newer vvah. Is this a dumb idea, or should I just go with all new parts for a killer wah sound?

those caps are polystyrene, right? or polypropylene...

one of those  :D

zero mojo. by mojo i mean worth.

"killer wah" is a matter of opinion.ive got a wah with a switchable inductor as well, between a '66 halo and a new area51 inductor...THAT is killer, in my opinion.  ;D

I would guess if round polystyrene, if kind of squashed then mylar (polyester). I have some squashed mylar made by Philips which are transparent (the "plain jane caps" today are those rectangular "greenie" mylars which are non-transparent) .

If the cap is clear round and tubular and you can see the foil, it's  Polystyrene. They sound nice and you should use it!

I use polystrene whenever possible ( I managed to score some in Austin a while back) but they are damn big!

I would think they are Mylar.  is it like this? is so mylar

polystyrene are good for a vintage wah,.. not modern IMHO. Modern polyester are better

From what I understand, polystyrene caps are very good for audio use. They seem to be very hard to find, though.  :icon_confused:

jonathan perez

where CAN you find polystyrene caps?

Should use nothing but "tropical fish" caps  ;)

Best polystryene IMHO is the Xicon ones from Mouser.

I used to use Tropical Fish Caps, but recently went with another modern polyester film capacitor that works good.  No difference.

those are the ones I'm referring to above. I used to think those were polystyrene, but since I bought a couple of old Philips mylar that look like that, I think they might be polyester (I think that makes sense since the caps which I assume to be the .22uFs look the same as the two smaller ones, and it seems that .22uF in polystyrene is very very uncommon--the biggest polystyrenes I have are .1uF). Besides the usual radial and axial packages, polystyrenes can also come in an epoxy-coated cigar shape as well as in a boxed rectangular package.

I don't see how it can make any difference what kind of cap you use in a wah.
Personally, I'd use greencaps.

thanks formerMember1, Yes, that is just like mine. The inductor in my wah has a rectangular cover and is labeled TDK.
So, they're just regular mylar without a dipped cover.

I was mainly curious because eventually I will experiment with different output caps on a few boosters. Ceramic caps are less linear and could add some harmonics, yes?

I've used those in one of my wah builds. They sound fine. I honestly can't really hear any difference between all the different types of caps that I have tried.
