o/ I built it on perfboard but it's arranged this: http://www.freewebs.com/loudnoise/payback.PDF
There were some problems with it: the TL074 on the left is reversed, I burned quite a few chips while figuring it out.
The 100uF cap on the right is crammed too tight, it's shorting.
The 1uF output cap on top left is a little messed up too.
Also, on some post Mr. Tone God said that the XCLK pin should be grounded. http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=47231.0
Other than that, it works great!

You should forward these observations to Michael Allen, creator of that layout. Keep in mind that I belive his layout called for miniture parts like the electro caps and 1/6 or 1/8 watt resistors which maybe why you had problems.

Yes the XCLK input (pin 26) should be grounded. I forgot to update the schematics on the site. I have just updated the article's schematics and put message about it on the front page.

So you have built a Payback and it works ? The Tone God demands build report! ;)

So I'm figuring that layout needs to be reversed for pnp?  That sure is small, lots of under the I.C components!

Yes as long as you use IC sockets or you could try to put parts on both sides of the board. It is idea I showed off when I built my Payback into a 1590B:
