Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

As for the wah pedal. Yes, it's a common problem. Easy to fix though. Just put a modern non-true bypass pedal in between the wah and fuzz. Use a boss, ibanez etc. make sure the pedal has power, but leave it BYPASSED. It's built-in buffers will take care of the sound problem. You can buffer the wah, or the FF, but that's a bit more involved.

as for the trannies, it should be smooth, not grainy if i'm uderstanding your adjectives. First try switching Q1 and Q2. If it still sounds crummy, put a 10k trimmer on Q2's collector. for the easiest user-friendly info go to fuzzcentral. http://fuzzcentral.tripod.com/

Hope this helps.

Sound can vary enough so that it doesn't sound like 'itself' depending on how it's run and through what amp, what pickups as source etc.

FF will sound different anytime the input source is different, as in the case of buffered FF tends to sound 'harder', perhaps including the buffer between the wah output and wah Bypass switch?
Convention creates following, following creates convention.
