I want to use the above as selector switch for selecting one from a number of distortion effects ( the wipers would be wired to the input / output jacks and the poles to the pcb boards in / outs with a dpdt footswitch for bypass. however I'm not sure whether the inputs for each effect should be grounded when not selected which would require another switch wafer i.e. a different switch.I'm i right in thinking that if the input isn't grounded the effect may be developing noise, but if its not selected it doesn't matter because its not connected to the output.

if you're not having the output of any but 1 effect active at any one time, you won't get any noise from the other ckts  ;)

Try it with just 2, maybe use jumpers, no bypass switch, I do that as a 'proof' before I commit to something like that...
Good luck!
