i know there will be some eyes rolling, but here goes. ::)

in my little shed at the bottom of my garden, i have a load of transistors donated to me.
does anyone here know if any of them can be used for fx applications, or as substitutes for some widely used transistors...
i live in the uk, so i am in the BC part of the world.

in my shed i have...

BC184
BC239
BC327
BC337
BC548
BC558
ZTX551
ZTX753

many many thanks

A good haul of general-purpose transistors. Google for data sheets, and Google 'Zetex' for the ZTX types. It would be a good idea to either build a simple transistor tester or get a cheap DVM to check gain (and if they all work). The BC548 and BC558, for example, are updates of the BC108 and its PNP equivalent, good for 90+% of stompbox circuits.

thats handy to know, i've a lot of the BC548/558's
Could i use those and the BC239 as a direct replacement for the 2N5088?

many thanks

5088 is relatively high gain, something like 400hfe IIRC.
A Dmm w/hfe socket can tell you what the Hfe of a transistor is [ - leakage, but Si's don't leak much].
And it depends on the circuit, for a BMP high gain and low noise are good choices, for a FF the case is entirely different.
I think we're talking about mostly NPN Si transistors, in which case you'll find lots of applications for them.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.
