need a little condor SSS feedback

I've got both circuits working and sounding good, but I'm confused about a couple of things - namely how certain pots are wired.

In the condor the gain pot's wiper is the cap to ground. So when the pot is turned toward the Fet there is 0 resistance between the Fet and the cap and 1k between the Fet and ground - this is high gain

when the pot is turned toward ground, there is 1k between the Fet and the cap and now the + side of the cap is grounded?  There is still 1k between the Fet and ground?

So this isn't a variable resistor. It's a resistor that changes position. Hm. Why does the gain change then?

By the way, when the Fet is biased at 4.5v it sounds terrible. I turn the trim-pot until it sounds good and it's - 7.2v.  There is 2.5v on the source. And I put another 1.5k to ground, in series, after the pot. Trying to get rid of nasty crackle.  I think I've got it sounding right though (even if I'm doing it wrong) - a little bit of growl added when the gain is up.

In the SSS the output-pot is connected to the wiper of the 10k saturation pot.  When the sat pot is turned toward the op-amp's output, there is 0R between pin 8 and 'level'. There is 10k in front of the diode clippers.  When the sat pot is turned the other way there is now 10k in front of both the clippers and the level pot.

There is still 10k in front of the clippers!?  So what's that mean?
At max sat the clipping has remained the same but you just hear it a little more?

I just want to make sure things are peachy keen before I box it up.
Any comments from others with this circuit will be appreciated.

peachy keen?  well that's your problem right there.
