Jfet tester questions

i've built RG Keen's transistor tester according to the following layout

http://aronnelson.com/gallery/Richard-Boop-RLBJR65/test

but I've got a couple questions

1.  do the neg battery lead and the ground both go to anything metal off board?

2.  does the IC orientation matter?

3.  does it matter where DMM leads connect to?

When I get this hooked up correctly, do I just insert the Jfet to be tested and measure voltage?

Thanks

Sorry I didn't put the link to RG's article on that one. This layout (same layout as the old one) has a link to RG's article you need to read it to understand how to use the tester. http://aronnelson.com/gallery/album75/Fet_Matcher_1

Only thing that needs to go to ground is the neg. battery lead.

2.  does the IC orientation matter?
Pin 1 is the upper left.

3.  does it matter where DMM leads connect to?
When I get this hooked up correctly, do I just insert the Jfet to be tested and measure voltage?
See RG's article.

Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info Richard.

So, does the negative battery lead go to the ground on the board?

Yes, I did read RG's article, but I don't really understand it.  I'll read it again once I've got the circuit hooked up correctly and see if it makes sense to me then.

I guess I should have said the only thing that goes to the boards ground is the neg battery lead. No grounding to box etc.

I'm sure after you get it working and test a few it will start to make sense.
