Aha!!  So the key would be to put in a 1k trimpot in there to adjust back up to a regulated 9V...  I'll have to give it a try (and see if the noise is still tamed).

yeah you could use a trimpot. You're always going to have a small voltage drop across the resistor or trimpot, it's that pesky Ohm's law, there's nothing you can do about it. So If your supply is putting out 9 volts to start with the output from the "regulator" will always be a bit less than 9 volts. You could just adjust the trim for the best compromise between noise and performance.
