Way off topic, I know. But I like and trust the folks here (shameless flattery ought to get me something!). Plus, if you build your own fx pedals, you should at least try fixing your broken DVD player, right?

It ought to be easy because it simply won't turn on. Normally I just leave it on and one day I noticed it was off, and it wouldn't power up any more. That would tell me something in there just died. I would greatly appreciate suggestions of what to suspect first and how to check it, etc. It's just a basic set-top type player.

Well, obviously, try turning it on/off again. If that doesn't work I would start checking voltages beginning with the power supply & keep going from there. Don't forget to check the On/Off awitch. Also, the obligatory warning. There are lethal voltages in there so if you are not sure of what you are doing, don't do it! :icon_wink:

Sounds to me (if it is completely dead) as though a mains spike has killed the switchmode power supply. If so, I'd throw it away.

Other then checking for things like loose wires, burn marks, blown fuses, and so forth I don't think you will be able to repair it easily. These types of devices typically use specialized parts which you won't be able to get.

P.S. Lounge material ?

Thanks for the suggestions... sounds like I should just go out and get a new one.

I have no objections if this one is moved to the lounge- probably the more appropriate place.
