Thanks Mr Pushtone. I got fed up with glossy finishes too. Got to play a Trussart Rusty Holey Steelcaster a year or so ago and it was great but still a bit too polished - and the price! This one is an example of my pursuit of "extreme customization" - buy a cheap chinese axe and redesign it, often with a power saw. This one will have flashing and sound-to-light LEDs fitted for OTT visual effect. The 'rustburst' didn't quite come out as I'd hoped, so I mussed it up a bit.

Thanks for that 'Girl Brand' link - I love 'em.

You can buy plexiglass body templates for around $50.00. I think Stewmac has them.

but how about tracing a body?

It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.

A lot of folks have had great luck with this place.   I've never tried them, as I haven't made a straight-up clone yet.  I've also used an opaque projector and some decent straight-on photos from various websites to create a good actual-sized mock-up of my guitar body.  (Which I then changed around a bit, but I don't see why it wouldn't work fine to do a straight up tele guitar.)  You just take a few measurements you know the size of (scale length, string spread, pickup width, whatever) to get the thing sized up well.
