Re: What's your favorite medium for pedals? Anyone else prefer perf/vero over PCB?

I agree with burnt fingers.  I only perf board my projects also.  I'm going to try to etch a PCB next week sometime.  I like perf boarding.  I think it's a blast.  Debuging can be troublesome but I learn a lot when I have to go over the circuit a few times.  I'm always able to fix the problems.  Never been stumped yet. (Knock on wood.)  I've built over 40 effects and all of them work.  It's a matter of prefrence or what you're trying to accomplish.  I put a link to my site that shows a list of DIY stomps that I've built so far.  You can also check out some samples there.

Nice site oldrocker!!
I signed your Guest Book!
Thanks for the little tour

Hey there markm,
Thanks for signing my guestbook.  I used to have a studio for recording musicians in the Metro Detroit area.  But lately I've converted it to another DIY stompbox site.  (Like we need another one.)   Someday I'll get the rest of those sound samples done.  Anyway it's good to hear from you and I'm glad you liked the website.  Talk to ya soon.

Vero. Vero, vero, vero.

After about thirty years experience with the stuff, it is possible to build circuits on it on the fly. Not very compactly, though, but I like big pedals.

PCB has always seemed to me the way to go.  Yes there is the problem of disposal but with a bit of effort that problem can be overcome.  When I've gone through the whole process of building a pedal I want it to be as close to "professional" as possible - that would be my own image of professional quality.  I used pad-per-hole a few times in an effort to 1) learn how to follow schematics rather than layouts 2) really understand what's happening on the board.  A great learning exercise but I just didn't care for it as far as making a finished piece of work.  I've always wanted to use Vero but have never gotten to it.  It seems to be a good choice - no etching, no twisting leads all over the place.

Ain't it amazing! Everyone has a different set of reasons for why they prefer whatever it is they prefer.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

R.G. said it perfectly in post #11. I feel the same way. "Different bait for different catch." I use em all, depending on the circumstance.

Pad-per-hole has a little copper donut or square around every hole on one side of the board, perf just has holes, no copper anywhere.

i use perf because i've got a lot of it. and i don't have the guts to start making PCB's. i'm still looking for someone to etch them for me tough :p

i use pad per hole,
just because i dont like dealing with etching.
i might switch my "production units" to printed though.

Just for the hell of it I'd like to try the dead bug/epoxy brick method once. Might be kinda cool on smaller circuits.
