so, i recently bought a used Boss Blues Driver from joelap (thanks man, just like you told me!). The only thing wrong with the pedal was that the clipping diodes had been removed. i put in a quad array of 1n1914's, now the pedal works but pops and crackles constatly. any ideas?

if all your soldering is good then i would suspect one thing.

your circuit board or the enclosure is shorting against the input or output jacks. every time ive opened up a boss pedal ive manged to put it together just a little bit different than it had been previosly arranged. the input and output jacks have to be rotated a certain direction so that they dont touch anything. Try to play around with the arrangement of the jacks. I doubt clipping diodes would cause cracking unless theres a short somewhere.

i think i found it. there was an appalling amount of flux residue that sizzled as i reheated the solder joints. i kept it melted until the sizzle stopped, then moved on to the next joint. when i plugged it back in, it seemed to work okay. the sizzle/crackle is almost non-existent, so i think if i go and check all the other joints that had been resoldered, i think it will clean up all the way.
