Another comp built "Ross" but odd problem ?

I'm guessing that this is because of my 5k trim - rather than the 2k , with sustain pot cranked
and playing very softly, I get horrible mis-biased splatty sounds, also there's a "hint" of distortion when
using a Les Paul/HB equipped guitar ?? ( you have to be blessed with "Bat Ears" but it's there !! )

Project - Ross/Dyna comp from Tonepad ( Thanks for the PCB Paul :D )
             http://www.tonepad.com/getFileInfo.asp?id=9

Subs - extra Ross filtering caps are .68uf not 1uf
          5k trim pot NOT 2k !
          150k "hammer mod" r is a 100k
1n parallel with output 10k for treble lift
Sustain pot is a 500KC reverse audio

All else as specified in the schem and all components values checked pre-insert
I could just use a pair of 1k resistors if this will help ?

Thanks,
Marty.

As long as you got your 3080 from Small Bear or similar, and not from 70s era scrap, two 1ks will work.

That would be my suggestion. (But getting a 2k trim would be optimal.)

This should also solve the distortion issue because with a 5k in there you are essentially doubling (a little more, actually) the size of the signal fed to the 3080. 3080s start to distort when more than 60 mV is fed into either input.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jay - think I've solved it with some "micro" tuning of the 5k !
Playing VERY softly and adjusting it 'til the splatt is no longer evident on note decay
, it's now NOT "even"at the pot, but that could just be the trimmer's taper.
If I still notice any distortion, then I'll use a pair of 1k's.
3080E's came from Banzai and are new .

Marty.

Use two 1ks then.

I think you will find better performance this way.
