Hello all

I have a quick question. a mate brought me his TS-5, with some mods he wanted done. actually a lot of mods. he wants it mounted in a new cast alu case. new input/output jacks. true bypass. and a mod to give it more bottom end for his bass guitar. and a boost channel. so you would have 2 volume pots and you switch between the 2 levels with a foot switch.

As i was looking at the circuit of the TS-5 i noticed that alot of the circuit dealt wit the flip/flop little switch thing. and i was kinda thinking. it might be worth starting over. with so many mods it might be worth making a new thang.

what are your thoughts? is the TS-5 something special to keep. or can someone recommend a TS-5 clone with more bottm end that i can build

cheers

That sounds like way too much effort to put in on a crappy little TS-5 !
For what he's asked for, you could build something in less time ... how about
a "Full tone" .... search for Fool Drive   you'll find all the info and it includes a boost
foot switch and an improved TS circuit.

For a great sounding but simpler version, ROG's Tube Reamer V II

I agree with the previous poster. If you are going to invest in a proper box, switches jacks etc, you might as well build a new pedal from scratch. The components are just a few bucks worth of parts. Lots of simple DIY builds that probably would be a lot better than the TS5.

as for the bottom end question, i put a switch on my ts9 converted to ts808 that gives it more bottom end, but i never use it for guitar..

Just build one from scratch! You will probably sped more time and effort measuring the spasings of all the holes you have to drill that it will take you to plan out and drill the enclosure for the new build...

Yeah, I vote scratch too.  It will probably be easier.  Then he can keep his TS-5 with the half-assed switching for a backup.  Tonepad and General Guitar Gadgets have great layouts, and boards for sale, if you don't want to etch your own.  And GGG has a bunch of great mods listed.

+1, the amount of stuff he wants would be WAY easier to incorporate into a new build than it would to mod an existing one.

I'll tell you what : My girlfriend, I'm not happy with the way she is. I'm thinking about sending her to the plastic surgeon, so she can get her boobs done, a tummy tuck, a facelift, liposuction, and cheek implants. I don't really like her personality much either, so i'm gonna send her to the therapist and see if I can get that "changed up" a bit, and then send her to "manners school" too....

OR...i could just get a new girlfirend, one that suits me better !  :D

You are absolutely, 100% correct in thinking that you should juust start from "scratch" with a more appropriate circuit !

Well you guys have definately cleared that up for me. that fools drive sounds great, can anyone point me at a schematic for that unit?

cheers

Agreed build a new one.  Those boards in the Ts-5 are too big to fit even in a 1590BB box without some cutting.  The BYOC boards fit in a 1590B box and are a great place to start.

IF yer into building schtuff, and have Schtuff laying around to build with...
The board and wiring of pots etc. might cost a bit more than modding the ts5, but not if the TS5 dies in the process...and...you end up with a TS5 and a Clone Thang instead of just a hacked on TS5.
Close is probably what you'll get, which might be 'better' than the TS5 sound...and certainly can be made more easily tweekable...

Can anyone point me at the "full tone" schematic?

or another TS clone wih a boost switch, lots of bottom end!
