Jordan Bosstone Diode MOD

Just wanted to share this with the board here,
A neat little "mod" you can do with a Jordan Bosstone build is leave out the clipping diodes.
It turns the circuit into a gritty boost with a slight dirty breakup to it.
For those looking for a real simple OD to just add some grit, you may want to consider taking a look at it.
I used a metal can Fairchild 2N2222 for the Q1 position, this may have some effect to the tone.
I don't claim this to be an "original" idea at all as I'm sure some of you already have done this but for some of the newer fellas,
it may be the ticket for you.
I have the build both PCB and perf in my gallery.

you sure that mod leaves the bosstone into only a 'gritty boost'?

because that is the way i built it (diodeless), and i use it as a kickass raw distortion, much beyond a boosted signal.... maybe transistor hfe has something to do with it?

I agree, It may be the fact that I used an "old" metal can 2N2222a, quite low gain in fact a good Silicon Fuzz tranny.

there's a couple of different schematics floating around for the bosstone.
From memory, the more-or-less standard one has an 18k resistor on the collector of Q1.  The output of Q1 is buffered and doubled by Q2.  Overall gain is the hhFE of Q1 x 2.  For a modern 2N3904 or similar, that night be 800.  The original transistors would have given about 250 or 300.   
From memory, I used a 2N3904 but put a resistor (100 ohms?) on the emitter of Q1 to reduce gain.
