with a Switchcraft #12B jack, does it matter if the battery is touching one of the connection points? i mean, could it cause a short in the circuit?

also, ive been looking at neutrik jacks and some of them have "Normalling Contacts". what does this mean and do i need it?

i usually use stereo jacks to wire the input and mono jacks for the output.. never heard of normalising contacts.

thanks

It isn't good for things to be touching. All the batteries I've met have been at least somewhat insulated so it'll probably work fine. Still it'd be best to bend the lug some and add insulation.

Normalling jacks have a set of contacts that allow signal to pass through if nothing is plugged in. Usual examples are in effects loops, front panel jacks on rack gear and expression pedal jacks. The normaling contact on the tip is often used  on amplifier inputs as a shorting leaf to reduce noise when nothing's plugged in.

most 9 volts don't even have a conductive case.  take multimeter and see.  anyway, it's usually just safe to keep everything away from everything else.
