hey guys

im looking to stop using the cheap crappy thin hookup wire from jaycar and start using some of the nice looking wire i see in various builds on this board. :)

can you let me know what the best brand of hookup wire is? can i get a quality hookup wire pretinned?

anyone get it from mouser? i have to place an order and would like to try some quality stuff? anyone got a mouser part number for wire they regularly use?

thanks guys

Hi,
The best wire for pedals I have ever used,  is the mil spec "stranded-solid core" from small bear. Around $5 USD for a spool.

602-3050-100-01
is the mouser part # for a 100ft spool of alpha hookup wire [$97.42USD] that I am currently using. I have to say that I prefer the mil spec wire that small bear sells by far.

hope this helps,

Yep,
That's the best I have ever used for pedals. The insulation wont melt on you.

I started out using hookup wire from Radio Shack. I switched over to the Wire, #24 Pre-Bond, 50 Ft. Spool SKU: 0508 from Smallbear and I love it.

Thought I'd save some money and get more bang for my buck by ordering the Mouser wire. Switched back to Small Bear after one build.

Uhhmmm... that price quote is for the 1000 ft spool. The 100 ft spool is $21.62USD (they've gone up in price). I use the 22AWG Alpha wire, 602-3051-100-XX, which were about $15USD when I got them. Still not as cheap (as in inexpensive, better priced) as the smallbear offering. I have no probs with the Alpha wire, I actually like them.

+1 for smallbear #24 pre-bonded cable.  Will try out some of his mil-spec stranded-solid soon.  smallbear is so convenient and he's provided great service to the diy community for a while now.

Hi,

#24 Teflon insulated stranded wire, purchased from eBay (30c/m for 33m rolls). This wire is without doubt the best wire I have used. I won't be going back to regular wire again! The extra cost is WELL worth it.

Be warned though, you'll need a special wire stripper (expensive!) for PTFE wire as your regular one probably won't work. You can improvise a thermal stripper from nichrome wire though by bending it into a V and applying enough current to get it red hot. The wire is inserted into the hot V and rotated to give you a perfect cut in the insulation, which can then be easily pulled off by pinching between fingertips.

Most of the Rat Shack wire I see is used. It has a yellow label on it.
