I'm not sure but, I have heard the RI of the O/S is garbage.
Just hearsay though as I have no first hand experience with the RI at all.

I heard the same thing actually. I read quite a bit about the OS when I was building one a few years back.

Compressors are one of THE most misunderstood "effects" out there.  My experience is that a great many purchasers have little or no understanding of how they work, what they are intended to do (and NOT intended to do), or anything about the proper care and feeding of them.

It IS entirely possible that companies can re-issue a classic product and make some "creative improvements" that unintentionally eliminate the desirable aspects of the original, but this is such a bonehead simple circuit that I honestly cannot see what they could or would do to it to reduce its quality.  All the parts that were critical to the original are now more available and cheaper than they would have been in 1970 dollars, and even use of high-end semiconductors and 1% metal oxide resistors would likely jack up the production cost by maybe $3.

Nope, my money is on the criticisms originating from unrealistic expectations about the limits of the original.

Since your'e doing a one off...perhaps the delicate adjustment required for this idea appeals to you.
have a mosltly flat box, so it'll sit flat on the guitar body...with the 1/4'' prong sticking out [what'd be the bottom...the wide/long panel] somewhere toward the middle...adjusted 'just so' the jack's tip connector 'pulls it in' to the guitar body, and four rubber feet keep the box flat to the top of the body by touching it...this could actually be bumped and not mind, cable through strap would not provide much jack damaging leverage when pulled..the flat box over guitar jack would make any heavy tugs on the cable would just pull the plug out of the side's jack.
The plug may have to be mounted a little off center so the knobs dont interfere.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Once again the DIY Community has provided a lot of great input and useful info. Thanks. I've decided to build one of these (helloooo "1590"!) as close to the original spec as possible, and see how it sounds before I try to get clever with it's enclusure.
