LM317 as a ... ¿compressor?

Yesterday I connected the thing to the aux input of an audio amp which surely has a lower input impedance than my tube amp. I had to eliminate the last resistor, ie r8=inf, because the LM317 was clipping horrible.
Anyway don't think this will sound as a dynacomp, still I can't tell for certain what the chip is doing exactly. 

That is so clever. I need to try this one

Just a starting point. Maybe someone with better knowledge on electronics can make it work better.
