hey guys

im looking to make an authentic clyde wah.

does anyone have any *spare* tropical fish .22uf caps they could sell me and ship via regular post to aus? i need two. i have seen them online but the shipping us usually horrendous. you should be able to stick a couple of caps in an envelope fairly cheaply i presume. no need to involve fedex :)

tbom is considering selling me a couple of poly .01uf caps :) thanks man. If he cant spare any then i will have to wait for my next mouser order.

would there be much of a sound difference if i use greencaps for the .22uf and .01uf caps?

thanks guys

I'm pretty sure I have what you are looking for, but why bother. The green film caps will sound fine.

It's funny how people treat their guitars signal like it's playing through a $10,000 hi-fi stereo amplifier. People seem to go way overboard on their selection of parts in an attempt to get that perfect tone, but many times it's in vain. To give a relevant example, can anybody here tell the difference between a .22uF tropical fish cap and a .22uF polystyrene cap?

Maybe it's the colors he likes?  ;D

Very Good.
Ya know, Cliff's comments surely will open a can of worms (no pun intended!) that I do not wish to be involved in so.....I will bow out now.

I have never found anyone who could distinguish a mylar cap from a non-mylar cap by ear at a rate better than raw guessing, and I've tried.

I don't necessarily think that it is impossible that there exists a human somewhere that can tell a mylar cap from, say, a polystyrene, by listening, but I believe that they are rare.

That being the case, since tropical fish caps ...are... mylar caps, I have a great deal of difficulty believing that people can hear differences between two different mylar caps that differ only in the color(s) of the epoxy dipping applied to the outside of the cap.

Tropical fish caps are mylar caps which used different color epoxy dips to show the cap value. I'd be happy to set up a new blind A-B-X test to  see if someone can hear the differences, but I'd bet that the Difference Believers will not participate, again just guessing.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.

rg i would be happy to participate :) not doubting your view or tbom's :) i dont know and i think it would be interesting :)

is it possible that in certain circuits they would display similar audio output, and different in another circuit?

ie, they might make an audibly different effect in a wah with a halo compared to the difference they may make audibly in a straight up phaser?..

if i am to read your post correctly rg, you are saying that fish caps are made of exactly the same material as greencaps? ie, take away the colour, they are physically idenetical in chemical makeup?

cheers

Man, we are really jumping in and out of some mojo here. The big noticeable difference between the green caps and the fish caps are the physical dimensions, which some claim actually affects the sound (i.e. people say that the long, thin mustard caps in vintage Marshall's sound better than ones of different shapes). While the physical dimensions do affect the slew rate a bit, it really is just comparing apples to apples. There isn't any sort of an audible difference and honestly, if somebody feels that they can hear the difference then more power to them, whatever makes you happy. Just don't charge me 10x what a part is worth because it's "vintage" or "boutique" (whatever term they are using to trick the uninformed nowadays).
