I have searched and can't find what I am looking for.  A while back I remember seeing a thread on making your own knobs for effects pedals.  I think it involved clay and baking in the oven.  Anyone know where I can find that thread?

Cernit polymer clay is nice looking stuff. Not so easy to get pro looking results but I believe similar products are widely available.

That polymorph is amazing stuff, I fixed my Peugeot 405 gas pedal with it

If you want screw down type....
If not I made 'em from the hardest wood I've ever seen, shaping the end of the stick, then drilling the hole [for split shaft type pots], and cutting off the knob, further using the grinder to shape.
  ideas...
Drill a hole in the side of a thimble or other 'cup'
Carefully epoxy a threaded bushing to the inside [so it'll come exactly to the outer circumferance of a 1/4'' inside circle [where the shaft's side'll be], run a long through bolt into the bushing, out the inside openeing, use elmers or other soft glue and get a 1/4'' shaft to form the shaft hole on the inside, vaselined so you can get it out [you may have to ream the hole later, or use some scotch tape to widen the 1/4'' inside mold to better accomodate the real poshaft later.
So you have your bushing inside the thimble, the dowel rod sitting aligned, soft glued to the bushing [so epoxy does'nt mess up the threads] all you need to do is fill the cup with epoxy, and let dry].
The vaselined dowel should' pull right out, insert a shank screw for the knob thread bushing...done...er..finish sand, fill holes if any, paint etc.

I love the idea of the wooden knobs!  That has the potential to be absolutely beatiful.  Do you have any pictures of how yours came out?

Nope...hardest,densest wood I've ever seen, like rock...
Dark color, bought as mahogany, but everybody says 'that's Teac'...
The grinding burnt it, made the oils turn dark and enamel like...cool, they've been on for a year and faded none.
I use 'em on my guitar.
  Something hard/dense will probbly do.
Wood knobs are relatively easy, when made to be put on split shaft pots...just do the shaping while it's still on a big enough piece to clamp...or use a lathe...that'd be cool.
