i have both boss SD-1 that i modified with the mod in the schematics part of this forum http://home.earthlink.net/~darr3n/SD808.html. the stock chip in the SD-1 was a JRC4558DD is that the same chip as the JRC4558D or is it different

I think for our purposes you can consider them the same.  Most of those letters after the part name don't seem to matter much in my experience, except if they're SMT or something.

I thought the DD was a higher gain version of the D?

DD is a double shielded version and also more expensive, but both pretty much sound the same.
