Just ordered the SSM2166P from smallbear but forgot the 78L05 !
Could I use an "offset" voltage divider to get 5v, 47k/33k ? and only
use a 9v PSU .....
Does it work as well as it looks ??

Mucho thanks,

Marty.

Tryin' to catch up with me huh Marty??  :icon_lol:
don't know if I can answer your question because I built mine originally to Jack's layout but, I can tell you there are some topics here from about 6 months ago that discuss bringing down the gain a bit because as it sits, even with the gain pot set to minimum it is LOUD!
Mark Hammer helped me to straighten mine out with the gain issue so it finctioned "normally" and there are also some useful mods for the noisegate and threshold controls that I did to mine that made it much more user-friendly and improved it's performance quite a bit.
Just do a search and these post should be near the top.

I acquired several hundred 78L05s a few years ago when a local surplus place had an everything-you-can-stuff-in-the-bag-for-$5 bin.  I'd be happy to mail you a few.  Drop me a PM.

And yes, you need the regulator.  A divider simply divides whatever the battery voltage is at the moment, which changes over time.  The regulator keeps it constant, which I gather is important for various reference voltages needed for the inner workings of the 2166.  Remember, that puppy has not one, but two reference points/thresholds where it starts to do something different.  Those thresholds have to have absolute, rather than relative, values.
