Obviously, they're dirt cheap, but are they of use to the average joe? I mean how do you use them if the plastic barrel doesn't look like it can come off? So how do you solder them to double insulated wire?

There are some better quality items here that you may want to consider

http://www.maplin.co.uk/search.aspx?menuno=77676&MenuName=6.35mm%20(1/4%20inch)%20Mono%20Jacks&FromMenu=y&worldid=&doy=23m2

specifically these 2 items

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=1238&doy=23m2 I have used this one many times the spring type cable shroud at the end of the fitting really helps protect the cable.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?TabID=1&ModuleNo=1249&doy=23m2  these are magic for making up patch leads between stomp boxes on a crowded pedal board

hope this is of some help

True. Screws right off like the metal ones.

They are a bit flimsy though. No gigging with these.
