I built a handset telephone mic from the schematic below I took on Instructables.com, but I must have made something wrong because when I power it up, I smell burning! Can someone help me with this? I recycled a on/on DPDT switch instead of buying a SPDT. The first picture is the schematic, the second is how I built it. The pot is pictured from behind (the knob is on the other side).

Also, does anyone know about the wiring of the handset? I can't open it. There's two white wires, one black and one red. Which ones are for the mic?

Thanks

as connected you have the hot wire of the battery connected to ground. this will overheat the battery, fry components, and basically make you have a bad day, especially if the battery explodes!

your battery shouldn't be connected to the resistor at all. the leads from the pot and the electro should be on the OTHER end of that resistor. you may need to start from scratch, you don't really have much wired up like it is in the schem. gimme a bit and i'll draw up how you can wire it with the parts you have.

okay, if the schem you posted is correct (which i'm dubious about) and if my reading skills are what they should be (also dubious :)) this should work. try it and post results :)

Thanks,

But I don't understand why the ground from the Handset In touches the + of the Audio Out via the electro cap. Aren't ground and + not supposed to touch?

The original schematic was way more simple:

The guy added the cap, the resistor and the pot to limit voltage to line level.

I tried your way and nothing works, but at least I don't smell anything  :)
I also tried to connect the ground from Handset In to the + of the Cap instead of the -, and nothing either (and I still not smell burning)
I also tried with 9V instead of 1.5V
Maybe it's the mic from the handset that that is bad, or could it be that one of the pieces have fried?

sorry, that pink wire should have been attached to the other side of that cap, it was late...  :icon_razz:

well, as i said, that schem you posted does seem screwy. if you will note, the handset has no + or - notation, and the resistor from what i can tell is functionally bypassed by the handset mic. the volume pot is the only thing he added that i can tell is wired properly.

i could be completely wrong, so i would love it if someone else weighed in on this. but that resistor placement definitely looks odd. perhaps it should have been in series between the furthest right handset lead in the schem. and the cap. i just can't see the purpose of that resistor when the handset mic bypasses it. plus, if i'm reading this correctly, you have voltage of 1.5 going to the negative lead of the handset mic. very odd and i can't see how it would work. it seems that the cap and resistor network should only be in line of the signal path, not bridging part of it as with that oddly placed resistor.

i emphasize, again, that i'm guessing based on my limited knowledge, and happily await someone to step in and confirm/disconfirm what i'm saying.
