A fuzz of some kind? Sounds huge. Is this a pedal or alot of Jimmy's studio prowess?

Skreddy

Sounds like his typical Tone Bender MkII, with the guitar's tone knob rolled back.  Of course reverb, likely room reverb but maybe studio plate reverb.  And to my ear, it sounds like the fuzz is going into a big amp, which is maybe a bit unusual for Page, known for his use of lower-Wattage amps for recording.  But it sounds like more fuzz pedal and less amp breakup to me.  That slight upper octave is a common artifact of a good old fuzz box.  --Wait; did he double track that, too?  Sounds like two guitars...

I thought he plugged straight into the board.  Sort of like Iommi on 'Paranoid'.

Wasn't that the LP recorded in a Castle?
I think I had read that somewhere....GP maybe....he had the amp in a big fireplace or something?  ???

I think they only wrote most of the acoustic tracks in that Bron Yr Aur cottage they had, don't think they recorded it there (for the third album)

Well, never-the-less, Page has some Country in him!  ;D

Maybe he double tracked it through his fuzz+ amp and another track through the board.

When I got my first guitar I played through my parents cassette deck which had a mic in, and then through the reciever.

THAT was the coolest fuzz sound I ever heard. I wish I could get that sound out of a pedal.

It's definitely direct to the board, and either the board is overdriven or possibly his TB is between the guitar and the board.  Another strong possibility (I haven't heard it in years) is guitar ->compressor -> mixing board which was another way he would record guitar (Black Dog).

Don't underestimate JPJ's contribution. A lot of the folksy, acoustic, trad stuff was him.
