scope question, and GGG 808 clone problem

All,

This weekend I tried to debug a problem I'm having with the GGG 808 clone. What I don't understand is this - when I hook up the signal generator in my scope to the in of a working fuzz face just to be sure I'm not totally off base, and look at the wave form of the output, with max distortion all I see is what looks like fuzzyness at the peaks.
The effect is similar to a photo of a busy street with multiple trails from the tail lights, except it's the wave form jittering slightly up and down. Is this what I should be seeing ? I've never seen scope output from a distortion unit before, so I don't know.
Also, could someone suggest the best frequency and signal voltage to use for debugging a distortion unit? My scope can go from 10 -> 1M, and amplitude is variable too. I've been using b/w 1K and 10K mostly, with max amplitude to get the clipping to go, but it just doesn't seem to want to work the way I expect.

Thanks

I'd use something from 100hz to 1khz on the signal generator as thats where the majority of the sounds from a guitar happen
probably only 100mV or so (or just hook it up to your guitar and see how high the voltages from your pickups get)
