hey ya'll

Im doing 4 BYOC projects and I need to know the best place to get pots. Im not real familiar with all this stuff, i just bought the PCBs and have located almost all the components I need on SmallBear- a really great site- but on the BYOC lists it says things like B50k ...what is the letter stand for? It says I need the following:

Fuzz: A500K audio Volume Pot, B1(2)K Linear Fuzz Pot

808: 500Ka Pot, 25KB Pot, 100Kb Pot

Trem: B1Meg Pot, A25K Pot

Comp: 1 - B500K Linear sustain pot
1 - C250k Reverse Audio attack pot
1 - A50k Audio level pot

If someone would be kind enough to maybe sort these out and help me figure out which are which i would REALLY appreciate it!! I have a huge shopping cart full of stuff on SmallBear right now so that would be preferred!

When reading pot values the letters determine the taper of the pot for example, A stands for Audio or Logarithmic, B is Linear taper and you will sometimes come across C which is reverse taper.

Smallbear should sell these pots, although you may have difficulty finding the reverse log taper pot.

Thanks!
So, A and C are both audio?.. ???

What about 16mm vs 24mm. Is that the lenght of the shaft? If so, which is standard. Thanks again.

WelshWonder

Sorry typo, just corrected it, C is reverse taper. best go with 16mm ones as they have a smaller body with will be a godsend as enclosures can get fairly cramped.

16mm and 24mm are not the length of the shaft, it's the diamter of the body.

Be careful.

USA and European taper designation letters are different. This explains it quite well.

The most common designators are :-

A500K = 500K Logarithmic, Log, Audio
B500K = 500K Linear, Lin
C500K = 500K Reverse Log, Antilog
G500K = 500K Modified Log
M500K = 500k Modified Antilog

The G and M suffixes/prefixes indicate that the pot is not uniformly logarithmic across its travel and usually mean the resistance curve looks like a hysteresis curve - short description is a log/antolig curve with a flat spot at half-rotation. Not a common pot thankfully.

16 and 24mm are the physical diameter of the pot. Shaft length is usually separately quoted.

Thanks for the quick replies. I think I may be posting on here quite often as I am slowly beginning to compile everything for my 12(so far) effect Cornish style Board!

Im not finding a listing for a 25K Audio Taper Pot...not even in Mouser...anyone know?

WelshWonder

22k will do, 25k are not standard so you will have trouble finding them...
