hello,  first post.    been waiting a while for my account to get activated, so i got a few questions. (but i'll address those in seperate threads)

Although not a stompbox i think you guys will be able to answer it:

I just built Dan's "Noisy Cricket" amp,   and it sounds great, but theres a few problems.   first, the volume starts at the 10 o'clock position, theres no sound below that, only a slight hum.  i might be inclined to think that this is a busted pot if it wasnt for the second issue.

the second issue* is, the tone control has the same problem between the 7 o'clock (bottomed out) and 8 o'clock.

Any help you guys can give me would be appreciated.

*in addition to this,  the tone control isnt very dynamic.  im using a 100k with .01uf caps.  what values do i mess with to give me more control?

i had a pot problem once...

anyway, sounds like you need to test your pot resistance on both. i have, in the past, received as many as 15 faulty pots from the same supplier in the same shipment. the fact that they are both behaving badly, but both behaving in different ways, tells me it may be pot defects, just two different ones. just a guess though.
