Converting a standard pot wah to optical?

Can it be done? I know about the Morley wahs, but how hard is it really to build an optical wah?
Surely somebody must have done this already, or just a link would help me out just fine.

You could use the rotary encoder out of an old ball based mouse along with a digital pot and a microcontroller of some sort to replace the pot.

Resolution on both the encoder and digital pot is just horrible for wah usage not to mention all the other issues. There are better ways to to use a microcontroller for controlling a wah.
