This has come up a few times recently, have you seen the max 1044 charge pump IC notes at Geofex.com?  it shows how to make -9v from +9v.  That's the way to do it, unless you want to run it on a battery, or have a fancy power supply like the Pedal power ones, with isolated outputs.

  Those are viable options.
If you connect the _ to ground on one effect, and the + to ground on the other effect, you will have a short on the PS.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

Thanks , so if i ran all effects in the chain on battery power & plugged them in the usual way (as if i was using all negative ground effects), would i be OK ?

Positive ground and negative ground are power supply issues.

If you power all of your effects on individual batteries, you have no problem.
If you power all of your negative ground effects on one power supply and the positive ground effects on a second power supply, you have no problem.

You just can't power both positive and negative ground pedals from the same 9V source. The negative ground ones connect the (-) lead to ground, and the positive ground ones connect the (+) lead to ground. Then when you plug in a signal cable, the signal cable ground braid ties the + and - together. Two separate power supplies will be fine.

In response to the questions in the forum - PCB Layout for Musical Effects is available from The Book Patch. Search "PCB Layout" and it ought to appear.
