i just built Tim's utility boost. i was wondering if i could convert it to an OD with a diode pair to ground just before the output cap. any thoghts?

I think you'll need to DC block before the diodes so doesn't upset the bias.
Convention creates following, following creates convention.

how do i do that? maybe an electro?

Yeah, electrolytic will work, but you can easily go with a film or ceramic cap as well, if you plan on using a relatively small value (up to 1 or 2.2 uF), like the in the Guv'nor or DS-1

so say i put a .1 right before the diodes, think that would be enough?

I'd think that it'd work just fine as long as you put the diodes after the output cap- I've done that to circuits before without issues.

It's very case specific and of course, a matter of taste. For Guv'nor, I find it to have good low end response but in the DS-1 I don't like the stock 470n cap. You need to experiment and find out waht works best for a specific circuit, as frequency shaping, before and after the shunt diodes plays an important role... so breadboard away :)

but how did it sound?
Sound is a very subjective thing, and it sounds different with any circuit. After getting the right clipping diodes, to my ears this method worked reasonably well.
