Just use a pot or a trimmer, then measure the resistance after? Thats what I've been doing.

there are other things there other that the resistance wheel

but the wheel comes in handy if you have no idea what sort of resistance range you should be looking for at all, then get a pot to dial it in the measure (:
i suppose you could use a 1m or so pot quite often then measure that, then use a more accurate pot.
