Help with ROG Umble (wiring pots)...

I built the Umble from ROG on perfboard today and when I went to wire the pots I got confused.

How do I wire the 'volume' (gain) knob?  It says 'volume lug 2' and nothing else?

Also, 'mid lug 3'?  What do I do with the other two lugs?  (connect 2 - 1 - ground?)

Keep in mind that the perfboard layout doesn't show some connections, it just shows the components and wires that go to the board.

Volume lug 3 connects to Treble lug 2.

Mid lugs 2 and 1 are grounded.

Also, remember to place the 47p cap between lugs 3 and 2 of the Volume pot.

dang. i wonder -- is that why everything suddenly got better for me once I switched to etched boards?
couldn't really read schematics when I used perf, have to get back to those old projects some time soon.

Holy Schnikees!!!!!

(wipes sweat from face)

This thing rocks!!!!!  I just turned the neighborhood on to the glorious sound of Hard Rock....

Although it sounds great:

The knobs are still messed up.  The tone controls seem to control gain and it keeps shorting out.

these pics probably won't help as it's a grade A mess but....

Here is how it's wired:

Treble
1 - to .1u cap
2 - Volume 3
3 - 330p cap

Mid
1 - to ground
2 - jump to mid 1
3 - to .047u

Bass
1 - 10k
2 - to lug 3
3 - to .1u cap

Volume (47p between 2 and 3)
1 - ?
2 - 220k>330p
3 - treble 2

Master
1 - to ground
2 - to switch
3 - .0022 cap

Do I need to ground lug 1 of the volume pot?

B Tremblay

Yes, ground lug 1 and things will work much better.  Remember to refer to the schematic for wiring!

Thank you.

I'm still really new to this (5 months) and I'm just starting to understand schems.  The only other perfboard project i've built was the peppermill so this was a huge leap.

Oh, and I just found this thread (doh!)

http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=46194.0

which has a great diagram of the wiring.

did you get it working Ben??

B_of_H

Got it working but the magic of my mistake is gone.  It's hard to explain the difference other than to say it's less articulate and 'vibrant' now with less gain and sustain.  It's much less 'pure' sounding now but works great in an enclosure with no noise or switching pops.

What are some mods I could try?

What good does this 47p cap connected to the volume lugs do?

The mid control doesn't seem to be working and the bass and treble are highly interactive with the gain/ output.

I was going to take the 47p out and put a jumper in its place but I thought I should get some suggestions from people here before I go hacking up a finished pedal.

the 47pf allows high treb freq's to pass around the vol pot at low vol settings (bright switch-ish), as the vol is turned up, it's effect is less pronounced.  As to the b/t controls interacting with the gain, that doesn't sound odd at all, some crkts just do that.  Someone that has actually built will have to comment, as I haven't built this one myself.
