Either that or trimpots for the resistors in question

i have to get my hands on some of your germs.  very soon.
Anywhere but here, that would seem odd...

^that might be a possibility...i just ordered stuff though, so...not in the nearest future :P

i will just do some of the "recommended vintage wah mods" i guess

Gimme gimme shock treatment.

well, 47k volume resistor, 420-470 ohm bass/gain, 1.5k mids (2.2k is not necessary), 68k-100k Q, .01 sweep caps, halo inductor, and bc109c transistors...thats my favorite vintage wah.  ;)

mpsa18s, i think? i think they sounds fine, but if you want lower gain, try something around 400.

Hey, hendriko, good to see you over here. You might recognise me from my avatar... same one on UG.

I have BC109C's in my wah as well... I tried lower gain ones (even tried 2N2222's) but they just don't sound as good to me.

I'm not sure which inductor TBOM gave me, might have ben the whipple, but it sounds awesome.

I recently (past month or so) bought the black bear wah pot from SB and it was scratchy like hell. He was having problems with them before and did a recall, but when I told him about it, he just gave me tips on how to fix it myself and didn't want to exchange it (thing is, if he knew that they were faulty why did he keep selling them even after he said he got a new batch... ohh well, whatcha gonna do). The fixes didn't work, and it's even more scratchy now... I put the original pot back in. I would get the hot potz if I were you, a little more $ but you know it'll work, plus Teese came on here before and gave us a little tip on how to convert it to an ICAR taper as well.... had something to do with adding a cap but I can't remember the thread or what value cap. I'm not trying to bash SB's pots or anything, just a fair warning that the black bear might be a 50-50 chance of getting a scratchy one. I still, and will always (as long as I DIMyself) use SB for most of my parts. Great service, and great parts.

you put a .33uF cap in place of the .22 cap going to the wiper. or you can put a .1uF in parallel (on the bottom) to the .22uF cap going to the wiper...i just did that today, and my area51 wah SCREAMS...the top end is more pronounced, and sweeter sounding...its not spot on like an icar pot, but its pretty damn close...i think ill drop a .22 cap in parallel to create a .44uF...hmm...experiment time!!

yea, nice to see you here too...umm, i think i forgot your name if you ever told me, sorry  :P

anyway, i'll definitely try the whipple when i get some dough/my dad to order it
they don't ship to europe do they? if they don't, i'll have to order it before i move there
how long does shipping for the whipple usually take?

so the BC109C's are good for that? i might try that if i order from smallbear in the next 2 months

i'll see about the smallbear pot (i mean its "only" 17 bucks) - if i can afford to "risk" it, i'll go for it :P
not to sound...weird/dumb, but after dunlop decided to copy a vox wah (the design and all) only so they could sell it as a hendrix wah, i try to stay away from their stuff cuz its all only for money-making (not that other companies don't do it, but dunlop has it a low)

cheers!

i have about 5 black bear pots, all of which have been working fine...he did have problem with alot of them, but the new ones work fine. steve is an honest and good guy, he'll take good care of you and ships worldwide.

i love dunlop stuff. i own 3 wahs, all with just 3 mods...they sound great! for the price (used, 40 bucks on average) you cant get a better wah...you cant build one from scratch under 40 bucks, thats for sure...

the shell alone is like 50 bucks...

tbh i do want to get an old (maybe "broken") crybaby and mod the hell out of it

just to see what can be done to a wah

and my vox (which i already know for sure) is gonna be like the vintage wah :P

ive done that many times...i cant just leave a wah alone. not once have i bought a wah and NOT modified it..

i had a mint condition dunlop wah with the old thomas organ parts/SOD inductor...for 30 bucks!!!!!

2 weeks later, theres a bass/gain-volume-Q controls on the side of the shell...i cant resist, ever...

haha
thats a pretty awesome deal right there!

i've been looking at some old ones with the stack of dimes inductor and one of the japanese made one
the stack of dimes seems interesting...dunno what it went for, but still

i thought about adding sweep range and a volume pot to my vox, but then again, i didn't want to mess up the enclosure, and i decided to just get a plain old crybaby and mod it

jonathan perez

for voxes, i leave em be...crybabys are begging to be modified...sweep ranges, inductor switch...all the goods.

true words

just a random question, but could you increase the physical sweep of a wah?
Gimme gimme shock treatment.

jonathan perez

sure, dump the rubber feet on the front and back of the rocker, lower the switch, but enough so it barely switches on and off..and adjust pot accordingly.

For me, the biggest change in the pot is the amount of "snap" in the middle of the wah sweep.  YMMV.

bigbud

It's 500mh not 700 but I don't care I tried to help out someone by posting a response and all I get is battleofmiday giving me crap.

so I don't care my wah has italian vox tone yours probably doesn't.

jonathan perez

i wasnt giving you crap, just my opinion. im entitled to it just as much as you are.

i own 2 italian wahs (jen and a clyde) and have built over 80 clones. not that it really matters...

im sure that my main gigging wah doesnt sound like an italian wah. but hey, im 25% italian, by blood.  ;)
