Solid capacitors

Came across this article from Gigabyte, the IT manufacturer.  Wondered if anybody ever put "solid" caps in their pedals, should we expect any benefit (other than extra life) from these?

well, if youve got your pedals on running at high temp, 6 days a week, then id say absolutely...

otherwise, no dice.  ;)

Well, there is the thing about impedance difference, although I really can't say if it's advantageous ( I don't really understand the whole impedance thing), but I'm sure it might make SOME sort of difference...

jonathan, did you get that board  yet?

Paul Perry (Frostwave)

I certainly would not bother.
1. how often have you found a faulty electro in a FX box? FX is a pretty easy environment!
2. Apart from LFOs & audio filters, there isn't really anywhere in a FX box that a cap has to be exact in value - and those spots aren't usually filled by electros anyway.
3. If you are worried that a cap may not have low enough impedance at higher frequencies, then just put a .1 bypass cap across it. They cost nothing & that is what they are for.

Now, it is true that a decade ago or so, there was a batch of dud electros that ruined a generation of audiovisual gear.... but that was then & this is now.

Plus, I don't like the way the charts show the solid electros life decreasing by a factor of 3 per 10 deg temp increase. Virtually all chemical recactions run at the rate of 2 per 10 deg temp. (as you can see from the accompanying normal electro failur e rate chart). So somethig pretty weird is going on... If you are worried about temp, use an electro with the 105 deg C rating.

I'm not tempted.

I had nothing in mind, just wondering if they had any possible use in our field.  Yeah damn expensive though :)
