I've ordered all the parts for my attempt at the ugly face. Just double checked against the schematic...

http://www.geocities.com/tpe123/folkurban/fuzz/uglyface.gif

and I can't see where the on/off led goes !! The only symbol I can see is for the optoisolator. Can anyone help me ?? Also, would I need to use a specific rating of led or use it in conjuction with anything else ?? I'm completely new to all of this so sorry if this is an easy question.

Thanks in advance.

Andre

There is no on/off led in this schematic, so you will need to add one yourself.

You can read all about it here: http://www.geofex.com/
Go to the Guitar FX Faq and check "Bypass, true and otherwise".

Here: http://www.generalguitargadgets.com/index.php?option=content&task=view&id=172&Itemid=200 you will also find very usefull information.

there are a few ways to go about it, but the easiest and best in my opinion is to replace the dpdt with a 3pdt switch. then you will have 3 left over legs to make switch the LED. otherwise just use it without the led (:

You should be ok to use it without the LED - you will know when this thing is turned on!  ;D

Thanks for the replies...

I'm just confusing myself here. I'm already having trouble with this thing as it is !! I don't think my brain will be able to handle having to change wiring before I've even started. I'll probably just get on with building the pedal and add the LED at a later date. Like Isaiah said, I'll know it's on from the samples I've heard !!

Thanks for all your help !!

Ok. After a bit of thought, I've ordered a 3PDT switch with the intention of fitting it along with the LED. One problem... I still don't have the foggiest idea how to do this ?? Is there anyone out there who has done this before me and can give me a simple diagram ?? This is the first pedal I've had a go at and I don't want it to be my last. Harder than I thought though !!

Cheers (again) everyone.

yes. we can definitely guide you through it. maybe you'd like to try to get the effect going first? a DPDT (double pole, double throw) can also be called a 2PDT (two pole, double throw), which makes more sense when compared to 3PDT. the wiring for the 3PDT would be exactly the same as you were going to do with the DPDT, except that you will have 3 pins left. with these three pins you can use two of them to break and make the connection for the LED.

I've written up a little lesson with diagrams to help explain it here:

http://www.dazatronyx.com/support/true-bypass-technique.pdf

the final method that i used is more complicated, but reading the top half will at least explain how a dpdt works

edit: using 'figure a' in that tutorial will suit your needs. it's exactly like the DPDT method but with an LED added beside it.

Thanks for that !!

The PDF (in conjuction with the other answers) has really helped me, and I'd like to say a big thankyou. I'm finding it all a bit daunting at the moment, but I suppose once I've got one out of the way, I'll have more confidence to start my next. I've decided I'll use the 3PDT with one of the diagrams shown here. I'll ask in my local electronics shop for resistor values when I buy the LED.

Cheers !!
