Need help with the buffer of a Ruby

I have a Ruby which I breadboarded without the buffer part, and it worked fine. But since I want to add a tonestack to it (using the schematic provided here http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=57126.0 ), I added the buffer, and I still haven't put the booster and tonestack parts.
I didn't have J201s, so I used T9540Ns instead. Of course I watched the pinout (I always do).
Now the circuit produces a sound that resembles a sine wave and not the guitar signal.. In fact, the guitar signal doesn't seem to affect the sound. Tweaking the volume knob changes the wave length and not the volume, so I get different pitches of the same sine wave.
What to do?
