i've been searching for some info on how to get +/- 15v from a single 9v or 12v supply for some synth-type circuits...is this possible?  can anyone point me in a good direction?  i've read rg's notes on power and i'm not so excited about using ac mains right now, so i've come across the max1044 and the 555-based voltage invertor.  http://www.aaroncake.net/circuits/vinvertr.asp

i was thinking to use a 9v supply, boost it up to 18v with the max1044, drop it down to 16v (? - create a reference using resistors/caps? or diodes?), then invert it and end up with +16v/-15v.  (drop the +16v to +15v?)

any ideas?  maybe just try and run those circuits on +/- 12v...? :-\

Paul Perry (Frostwave)

Most of my Frostwave boxes are based on synths with +-15V rails (the Resonator is an exact clone of the filter section of the Korg MS20).
What I have done, is to use a 144 AC plugpack 9that is $5.05 from www.jameco.com ).

I run one side to ground, the other side to a pair of rectifier diodes and caps so I have raw + and - ( about  18v peak) and these go to a + 14 regulator and a -15 regulator.
And there you are.
I do this because:
1. I don't need to mess with the mains (and it would be illegal for me to do so anyway).
2. It works fine
3. It's simple as you can get.

OK, this isn't the answer to the question you asked - but it's an answer to the problem you have!
