Fuzz Face question...

Hello everyone,
I have a question that is killing me...
In which way does the change of the 470 Ohm resistor to 1k in the classic fuzz face circuit affect the sound?
This resistor is often subbed by a pot ('69) and this pot is named contour... is really a contour knob? I know the fuzz face is louder with 1k instead of 470, but I used to think the freq. response was the same. Am I right?

If memory serves, I have also sen it called a 'mids' pot, so it probly does have some effect on the EQing of the circuit.

so maybe higher resistor is more mids...
The most notable change is in the loudness of the pedal. Now I just put the one that was on the breadboard in a perfboard, and just socketed Cin, Cout and the bias resistor. And I'd like to see wath the 470/1k resistor do other than loud...
