The little sales blurb at Musician's Friend states the following about this pedal:

"History was made in 1975 when a mom-and-pop store in California commissioned the production of just 200 of what is perhaps the best overdrive effect ever. Unlike any other unit, that pedal authentically simulated the breakup that occurs when a tube amp is run at full volume. You will occasionally see an original in the stage rig of a major artist. IF you could find an original offered for sale, you should probably sit down before inquiring about the price "

It's not clicking with me.  Exactly what pedal are they supposed to be talking about? ???

I've been wondering about that as well for the last year.  I can't pin it down to anything.

Is it possible that it's the Dist+ before MXR was really MXR?

Mark Hammer

MXR was based in upstate New York.  Now I suppose that doesn't necessarily preclude an order from California putting them over the hump and truly into the stompbox business, but the connection is not obvious.  That being said, Danelectro does make ample use of designs whose copyright rans out years ago, so a Dist+ clone is not entirely out of the question.

Maybe someone has their copy of Art Thompson's "Stompbox" book handy and can offer some clues.

Of course, if it's not obvious to US, just what exactly is it that the ad copy is supposed to evoke in the minds of the average Musician's Friend shopper? ??? ???

'twas kind of a guess on my part.
I thought in aNaLoGmAn'S book, tom mentioned that MXR was contracting work before they became big but,
I could be mistaken......VERY mistaken as a matter of fact!  :)
So, I'll stick with the "guess" for now!!
Of course, you don't suppose this Mom & Pop shop contracted 200 builds from Maxon do ya?
Japan is near California!!  :icon_lol:
Maybe 200 was the minimum purchase?

Isn't the Fab OD just a Tubescreamer like OD with 5 diodes in the feedback loop of the op amp and the drive control to ground rather than in the feedback loop?

That's what I heard anyway.......

Mark Hammer

It may very well be.  Never looked inside one myself.  I'm just trying to make sense of the claims and historical references.

Just becasue there's no record of it doesn't mean that history wasn't still made :)

You have a PM!!

I think you're referring to the D-1 Fab Distortion, not the D-2 Fab Overdrive, correct? The D-2 is a Tubescreamer. The D-1 is that 70's mom and pop mystery pedal.
