Sorry that this is not stompbox related, but it is DIY musical electronics related.

Well today I had a idea. I want to build something that can make two XLR mics go to the 1/8th mic jack on my computer. I usually use a bunch of adapters and a really old mixer. This creates a lot of noise. Do you guys know of any plans or schematics to build such a devise? It should have 2 XLR inputs, one 1/8 output, and possibly two potentiometers to control the volume of each mic. The mics do not need Phantom power. Thanks

wouldn't it be a lot more cost and effective in results to just buy an audio interface? Maybe a 100 bucks new (or perhaps less used)?

You don't need to built anything but a cable that goes from XLR to 1/8".
The mic pre is in your sound card. Volume controls in your OS.

You could build a breakout box with XLR-F on one side and 1/8" jacks on the other and a couple of pots to ground.

If you absolutely need a preamp because your audio card does not have any (unlikely)
do a search for "simple mic pre". There is one floating around that uses a 9V supply.
But I don't think it will sound as good as even the cheapest mini mixer from Berh* Yama*, Ro*and.

Alternative: add some 1/8" outputs to your mixer.
It's time to buy a gun. That's what I've been thinking.
Maybe I can afford one, if I do a little less drinking. - Fred Eaglesmith

Yes I have a fairly decent sound card. I guess what I really want to do is to use 2 mics at once as cleanly as possible. The mics don't need a pre amp, just a way to mix them into one output. I like the idea of a breakout box. Where can I find schematics to one?
