I'm working on a buddy's, which had an intermittent problem...sometimes it worked, other times not...totally random.  I found that one of the NTE102A transistors has a defect, where the leads at the transistor end can move in and out of the transistor itself.  That would explain the intermittent nature of the problem.

Anyway, I'm having trouble finding a replacement through reputable sources, and I hesitate to buy off Ebay, since I have no way of knowing gain and leakage.  Any suggestions?  Is there hope of finding just one of these, which would be in the correct gain and leakage range, or should I just buy a set from SB?

The data sheet shows typical Hfe of 135, many PNP Ge transistors will do the job. Russian GT308V for example. Small Bear is a reliable source for small quantities- he has a selection of PNP Germanium transistors. For an exact replacement, Google it. There appear to be some who can supply it.
Some people drink from the fountain of knowledge, others just gargle.

You think I'd have a decent chance of getting one with correct gain, just by ordering from one of these online suppliers?

Probably the best thing to do-- is to google "Fuzz Face Matched Pair Germanium" or something like that...  Easily you will find a pair of transistors that will work.  Decide on what "flavor" you like.. and you can get a pre-matched Q1 and Q2 for probably like $10 or so no sweat.  AC128's would be a good choice.  You actually have a huge variety of choices..

I used to really be with it!  That is, until they changed what "it" is.  Now, I can't find it.  And, I'm scared!  --  Homer Simpson's dad

Ah, happy day!  My eyes deceived me, and it was actually the PCB where the base lead was moving.  I reflowed all leads on Q2, and, so far, it appear that I've cured the ail!
