Ok so I built the beginner project and the Little Gem and needless to say I've got the bug!!!
I'm wondering if someone can suggest a project for which all materials might be easy to find, at RadioShack perhaps?
I want to get materials so I can work on it this weekend.

Yiou can find parts at Radio Shack for most fuzz, distortion and overdrive effects and boosters.  My suggestions would be Fuzz Face,  Bosstone or Muff Fuzz.  Or if you're feeling a little bold try a Distortion + (DOD 250)  or ROG Mockman.  Actually Runoffgroove.com has alot of small and simple effects you can make with Radio Shack parts.  All of these are cool to mess around with after you get them built and working.

id say the muff fuzz or lpb2 (a booster, ggg has a nice layout i used). they were some of my first builds and i was satisfied with them.

I started with the Cheep '0' stuff, soon found out it's worth buying new electrolytics, and patching wires to resistors was huge hassle.
Super cheap board, even no board builds 'are possible techniques for circuits, [even dowel rods or matchbooks, but copper clad pads hold up better in the long run]..great time for me to suggest a breadboard.
Reads, and building is what learn's ya on what you want components to have as moddable, I never had a breadboard so sometimes I'd build a whole new circuit board because the one I used to find the mods after getting it working had become too funkified in one way or others to be sure I had a solid circuit.

I would check out the Multi-Face: http://runoffgroove.com/multiface.html at runoffgroove.com (http://runoffgroove.com).  Also read The Many Faces Of Fuzz written by Tim Escobedo: http://www.geocities.com/tpe123/folkurban/fuzz/fuzzyfaces.html.

The Multi-Face is an easy build, plus you can experiment with different caps and transistors.  You'll be able to see/hear the difference each one does, and how they effect one another.  You can locate all parts at the Shack.

Maybe a green ringer?
I think it's a very interesting, but also an easy to build project. Something different from your usual booster/distortion/fuzz projects. It's certainly next on my list! And the parts look common enough to me

Cool thanks guys! These all sound great. I am inspired!!

Some very satisfying and simple projects :
Joe's Easy Drive
ROG Mockman ( rockman sound alike )
ROG Grace/Big Daddy
ROG Whisker biscuit
ROG Tube Reamer
My own "Mr Drive" in my gallery !
My Own "London 2 step" Jfet OD , as above
AMZ Mosfet Boost or an Omega from ROG again, Rangeblaster from Fuzz central......list goes on and on !! :icon_wink:

You could also try out my first self-designed project. Just finished and verified the schematic and layout! It's an easy to build overdrive/distortion pedal, which has low parts count. Check it out in my layout gallery!  ;D

Bosstone is an easy build, sounds great (mean nasty fuzz), and is one that "usually" you can find good reason to keep around :)

grrrrrant

Other than talkboxes, my first pedal build was an EA Tremolo.  I thought it was easy, and it sounds amazing!

You definitely should build a TS-9 Tubescreamer, it is THE overdrive, in my opinion.
It has more components than a Fuzz Face, but you won't have the hassle of the Fuzz Face optimization. It is more versatile, also.

If you need some more gain for the music you play, I suggest you the great BSIAB2!

Have a good build!

Joe's Easy Drive
+1
You can experiment with the cap in the feedback filter, too (between the collector and base).
This and the Bazz Fuss blow away any ideas that simple circuits can't be great.  (I like version of the BF with the Darlington transistor (MPSA13/14)).
