hi

I have a problem hopefully someone can help me with.
I have a unit part built, powered by 9v dc centre negative. Can anyone tell me how to wire up the dc socket (2.1mm with break contact) so that the Aluminium case isn't connected to 9v?
thanks

I'm assuming you're using a metal socket on your case. Two simple choices - get a plastic 2.1mm socket instead (the Boss style connectors are the best, available from Small Bear among other places). Failing that, if you must use your existing metal socket, you need to use some sort of insulating bushings/washers to isolate the metal socket from the case. A third alternative is to make an adapter cable that converts your centre negative cable into a centre positive cable (or simply cut off its connector and wire it as centre positive), although I don't recommend this option as it's best to stick to the standard of centre negative. Personally, I hate it when manufacturers like EH use centre positive supplies and metal sockets. I always pull these out and replace with a Boss style plastic socket.

You can wire it as usual, but using a rubber grommet to isolate it from the chassis.
Something like this:
Drill the hole a little bigger and you are done.

Good luck.
