Switching diodes on transistor Muff Fuzz? question...

I built the transistor Muff Fuzz from GGG which calls for 1N4148 diodes.
What I used were these (http://www.radioshack.com/sm-1n914-4148-type-diode--pi-2062576.html) which are "switching diodes".
Does this matter? Are these the right ones?

The problem I am having is that the circuit sounds completely clean using the 2n5088 transistors.
Also tried 2n3904's. still clean.
I believe I used a combo of one 2n5088 and one 2n3904 and now its sounds fuzzyish distorted but with
a compressed "pumping" sound to it. I dont get it. Any help?

yes the 1n914's should work just fine. as for it sounding clean, is that with or without the diodes?

Its with the diodes. I only started to question them when I took another look at the package they came in.
The circuits works with the combo on transistors I'm using but it just has that slight "ducking" effect going on.
But obviously if its not working with the suggested transistors then something must be wrong.

well if you haven't already read it, http://www.diystompboxes.com/smfforum/index.php?topic=29816.0. but i would double check everything that is polar or has a specific direction to its installation, like the electrolytics and transistors.
