Q about MarkM's flatline layout

I was going to build a Flatline based on MarkM's PCB layout. I'll be using perf and it looks like I should be able to translate it directly.

I'm a little confused by D5 though. What's it for? I don't see it in the schematic and I'm not sure where I even get a 1N4401. If it's for reverse voltage protection, can I just leave it out?

markm

Circuit protection.
Probably a typo on my part.....1N4001 should work fine.
Take note of C5.
The schem states 10uF but, I had a bit of a problem reading it at the time and made C5 .1uF.
Don't know how much difference it makes and, some of PM'd me and claim that the .1uF sounds better than the 10uF?!  :D
I'll probably re-do this project soon.

moro

Excellent. Thanks for the clarification!

I just double checked the schematic and yow, it's actually 100uF. :icon_eek:

In this thread:

people seem to have had very different experiences with that cap. I guess I'll socket it and try some different values.

markm

See.....I was going with what R.G. had in the Flatline and the schem values are hard to read so, I used the 100nF (.1uF).
Many report no difference.  ???  :icon_confused:  :-\

Yeah, okay.
I see that now!
Strange.  :icon_confused:

Yeah, apparently, you can be off by 3 orders of magnitude and it still works. :icon_confused:

if you are going to build it on perf, you may as well build it on vero. i made a nice layout - its in the gallery.

hi mark  ;)

cheers

Yes, I saw your anti-perf rant in the other thread. :icon_razz:

Honestly, I find stripboard really hard to read. It's also hard to find and the layouts always seem to be bigger than the PCB or perf versions.
