Boss DS-1

I'm building a pedal that incorporates the Boss DS-1. Can anyone tell me why the insides of the pedal I have look something like this:

When the only schematic I can find, in a wide variety of locations, is this:

Note that the first picture is not my own, it's actually a slightly modded circuit. However, the point still stands, there's at least 8 transistors in the pedal I have and none on the schematic, plus a whole load of extra caps and resistors. Is this all to do with the switching? Or is it something else?

The schematic on the freeinfosociety site don't include the buffers and FET switches of the Boss DS-1. You can say it's a "simplified" version of the DS-1.

If you're building your project from scratch, it would make your life easier to go with the freeinformationsociety schematic.
